Long-tailed beastie rock crystal intaglio necklace

This prancing bad boy is carved into a 16mm x 16mm round rock crystal cabochon and set in sterling silver.

I approached this with complete freedom, just knowing I wanted to work on a loping animal form, but had no plan. I always run the risk of over-egging a thing if I don't create rigid stopping points, and worried that I'd done that here, but I like it more and more with time.

There's also an element of disliking too-neat designs that remind me of laser-cut pieces in glass-filled gift shops- lots of light refraction and a complete absence of mystique.

As with my wax work, all stone carving is done by me in my Newcastle upon Tyne studio in the UK. I use diamond-coated discs and burrs, and the process gives me the most colourful headache.

This piece is completely one-of-a-kind.
