Obsidian is a volcanic glass with a vitreous lustre, as evident here.

The sheer gloss is what drew me to the vintage cabochon, which I believe was initially carved for signet rings or cufflinks.

It measures 16mm x 16mm x 2mm and was begging for a mythical animal, that didn't quite feel complete until I put a fish in its beak.

As with my wax work, all stone carving is done by me in my Newcastle upon Tyne studio in the UK. I use diamond-coated discs and burrs, and the process gives me the most colourful headache.

This piece is completely one-of-a-kind.
